"It may seem
logical that parents should do everything that they can to make their
kids’ lives easier. But with her latest book, psychiatrist Genett
suggests that this might not be the best plan for either parents or
children.
Genett has spent much of her career teaching corporate
managers how to delegate responsibility. She has found that, under her
tutelage, managers were not only saving time, but the results were
better as well. Now, she takes her theory of delegation out of the
corporate arena and into the home. She asserts that children whose
parents don’t do everything for them end up more successful in school,
sports and other activities, as well as in interpersonal relationships.
With six simple steps, Genett outlines a plan that will help kids take
more responsibility in their lives, while building their self-esteem and
self-reliance along the way. Her advice is practical and easily
implemented, such as buying calendars for kids and having them record
their own assignments and activities. She also illustrates her chapters
with anecdotes and situations acted out by fictional “identical twin”
characters—one who follows her advice and one who doesn’t—which makes
her points come alive for parents and children alike.
For families looking to “get it done right,” Genett’s
program is a simple and rational plan with innumerable benefits.
